Katherine completed a 2 year diploma course at Weymouth College in letter carving. She achieved a credit and this skill is applied extensively throughout her career. This includes the carving and gilding of letters on stone plaques. Much of her work has been unveiled at prestigious ceremonies at historic buildings and for famous people. For example York Minster’s Great West door unveiled by HRH Duke of York and Ignatius Sancho in Greenwich Park. To see this work and more click on the Job titles on the left.
Where there is an existing inscription or font style to copy she takes a rubbing of the font to design the new inscription. Otherwise she will propose a suitable font and design.
She can also use her artistic carving skills to embellish the plaques with creative designs. She can enhance the inscriptions with gilding or by painting.
New inscriptions can be carved into an existing stone wall or monument. She also re-carves weathered inscriptions such as London’s Hampstead War memorial, West Hampstead Cemetery and The Lord Trenchard Monument which is outside the Ministry of Defence building, Whitehall, London.
She offers installation ideas, creative suggestions including design and discussions of stone types and techniques taking into account the setting and surroundings. Katherine works on site and in her London workshop N1, where she has ample space and machinery to handle large stones. She welcomes clients to her workshop and can fix her own work. She welcomes large contracts for which she may engage subcontractors.
