For beginners - advanced. Stone masonry is the starting block for all good carving. Katherine Worthington had a rigorous training in masonry and architectural stone carving. She has designed these courses based on her training to help her students progression.
Stone masonry is a basic skill in working stone effectively, this will aid and develop carving speed/agility and progression onto harder stones.
Carve a flat surface with a traditional pitcher, punch, claw tool and bolster. This is the key to the successful progression of stone carving, often overlooked on other courses. Advised for anyone who hasn't learnt stone masonry.
Group demonstrations with individual practice is given. Great fun is had removing large chunks of stone with the pitcher. Straight lines and angles are chiselled, bulk material is removed effectively with the punch, the flat surface is carved with the claw and finished to a tooled effect with the bolster.
Following on from the masonry (or taken as a separate course) the carving of an architectural flower panel commences.
Learn architectural stone carving - carve a relief flower panel - this has been designed to help students to extend and consolidate correct use of hammer and chisels. This will further aid and develop carving speed/agility and progression onto harder stones. There is a workshop example flower panel to copy. You will be taught how to mark out and copy a template of the flower panel onto your stone. Group demonstrations with individual practice is given on how to carve v - cut channels and sunken panels to create crisp edges and clean lines. You will be taught how to sharpen chisels correctly and how to transport your stones home safely at end of course.
I aim for a maximum of 8 pupils for one to one teaching on the day of the course, however on very rare occassions this number may increase as I allow the merging of several courses together. (This means students will get to see other types of stone carving which could inspire them).
