Stone letter carving ideas – design your own house sign, make pet memorial stones, carve meaningful words or loved one's names (display it as wall art or on a shelf). This practice could lead on to my stone carving relief (incised) course as you can embellish with a design (see example pics below). You may also get a chance to view other types of stone carving.
Beginners are advised to practice carving and spacing letters first. Choose your letters from the course selection* and I will teach you this.
Intermediate can continue with their carving, produce a drawing on the first day using letters/numbers from the course selection* or bring their own*.
Bring your own - sketches, pictures and ideas* to be looked at or choose letters/numbers from the course selection*.
All materials are included in course cost (there are no hidden costs).
Stone is selected to suit your requirements, whether you may wish to return and book an additional course for more time and whether you have a design in mind. Students will be asked this at the beginning of the course.
Letter carving stone/slab is included in course cost - small limestone (for beginners), small slate. Marble coming soon - this will cost extra. Larger stones can be supplied on demand for an additional cost and must be pre ordered.
Learn - a quick technique for the drawing and spacing of letters and numbers. Look at letter carving examples in workshop, look at designs. Learn how to quickly transfer and draw them onto the stone using a tracing method. Carve clean v - cut channels, chase and stab letters and carve serifed fonts. Look at embellishing the words with a simple v – cut design. You will be shown how to sharpen your chisels correctly.
Intermediate or returning carvers may choose to omit any of the above and proceed with their own work.
* Your brought ideas for this course are best in 2D and may be a drawing, design or a printed picture from books or magazines. Googled pictures on a smart phone or internet are very useful, however larger printed versions are better for copying. You can bring interesting objects to copy and draw free hand, such as ornaments, teddy bears, flowers, shells and leaves.
*Course selection has a choice of fonts with letters and numbers (included in course cost but for workshop use only). There are also varied designs for you to accompany your letters with.
*Bring your own drawing you must check with me first to see if I have the correct stone size.
Or
*Scale your drawing to fit the stone - this is very effective and simple. There is a photocopying shop next door to the course where you can do this.
*Class size 7 (maximum) people. However under vary rare circumstances the number could vary a bit because of admin faults.
